During the expedition the Spanish from Mexico had discovered the expedition from U.S. general James Wilkinson. The area was claimed by them so they sent four armed expeditions with fifty-two solders to intercept Lewis and Clark. On may 14, 1804 expedition up with Lewis at ST. Charles Missouri. Shortly after the expedition mat they went westward following the Missouri river. On August 20, 1804, sergeant Charles Floyd died, they think it was caused by acute appendix. He was the only member to die during the expedition. In the winter of 1804 to 1805 the expedition built a fort called Fort Mandan. While they were in the Mandan territory many Indians came all around to see them. One of the people they met was a French-Canadian fur trader who had an Indian wife called Sacagawea who became their translator and navigator. When the next winter came by they decided to have a vote to see which side of the Missouri river they wanted to sleep on and it was the first time a slave and a women could vote. They had a lack of food during the winter because the elk moved up higher into the mountains and they were to poor to buy food and supplies from the other native American tribes. One of their hunter accidentally mistook Lewis for a deer and shot him in the thigh.
